Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu
The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Tiruchirappalli is one of Tamil Nadu's most prominent Catholic pilgrimage sites, built dramatically on a rocky outcrop. The stunning grotto and the church atop the rock command panoramic views of Trichy and are a major draw for pilgrims from across South India.
Built in the mid-1800s by French missionaries, the shrine was modeled on the grotto at Lourdes, France. The Lourdes grotto at the foot of the rock is a popular prayer spot, and the church atop the rock is reached by a steep staircase carved into the rock face — drawing pilgrims who climb in prayer.
Tiruchirappalli is well-connected by rail (major junction on the Southern Railway) and road. The shrine is accessible from the city center.
